QR Code FAQ

Everything you need to know about creating, tracking, and using QR codes with PrefectQR.

Pricing & Account
Yes, PrefectQR is 100% free. You can generate QR codes with custom colors, logo embedding, and real-time scan tracking at no cost. No credit card, no trial limit, no watermarks.
No account is needed to generate and preview your QR code. You only create a free account when you click Download — this saves your QR to your history and activates scan tracking. Registration takes about 10 seconds.
PrefectQR codes do not expire. Once created, your QR code and its tracking redirect remain active indefinitely. Your QR code will always redirect to the destination URL you set.
Scan Tracking
Every QR code created on PrefectQR uses a smart dynamic redirect URL instead of encoding your destination directly. When someone scans, their device visits the redirect URL first, which logs the scan (IP address, timestamp, count), then immediately forwards them to your actual destination — typically in under 100ms. This is invisible to the end user.
Static QR codes encode the destination URL directly into the QR pattern. They cannot be tracked and the URL cannot be changed after printing.

Dynamic QR codes (like PrefectQR creates) use a redirect URL. This means every scan is logged with data, and you can monitor performance over time. PrefectQR creates dynamic, trackable QR codes — for free.
QR codes are just images — they can be scanned without internet. However, since PrefectQR generates dynamic tracking QR codes, the user's device needs internet access to follow the redirect and reach your target URL. For fully offline use, a static QR code (which encodes the URL directly) would be needed — but those cannot be tracked.
Customization
Yes. Upload a PNG or JPG logo during QR creation. PrefectQR applies a circular mask and embeds it at the center of the QR code. We use High (H) error correction — which allows up to 30% of the QR pattern to be covered while still scanning correctly.
Dark QR code on a light background scans best. Black on white is the gold standard. Dark green, navy, or dark purple also work well. Avoid light-colored or pastel QR codes on white backgrounds — low contrast causes scan failures on older devices.
QR codes download as 500×500 pixel PNG files. This is crisp at business card size and works well for menus, posters, and product packaging up to about A4. For very large format print (e.g., billboards), open the PNG in Illustrator or Photoshop and scale with "Nearest Neighbor" interpolation, or convert to SVG.
Business Use
Yes — this is one of the most popular use cases. Create a QR code linking to your online menu URL (Google Drive PDF, website page, or any link). Print it or place it on tables, counters, or entrance boards. When customers scan, they see the menu on their phone. You can see how often the menu is accessed from your My QRs page.
We recommend creating a separate QR code per campaign or placement. This way, scan tracking shows you which specific placement (e.g., "Front door poster" vs "Receipt QR") is performing best. Creating multiple QR codes is free and there's no limit.
